Dolores del Río
(1904-1983)


One of Hollywood’s first International film stars Dolores was borne on the 3 of august 1906, in City of Durango and first appeared in the silent movie “Johanna” in 1925. But it was in the movie “The price of Glory” that launched her career as real Diva. She taught Fred Astaire to dance tango in the movie “Flying to Rio”. She made a total of 30 films before returning to Mexico in 1943.
In 1945 she won the Gold Palm in the Cannes Film festival for her work in the Mexican production of “Maria Candelaria”. She worked in 80 movies one of her last films was “The sons of Sanchez” made in 1976.


Her outstanding beauty and professionalism gave way to a series of very successful plays such as “Anastasia” and “Lady of the Camellias”. Naturally Dolores posed for famous painters and sculptures of her time like Diego Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, Adolfo Best Maugard, John Canoll Francisco Zuñiga e Ignacio Asúnsolo.

Known to her friends as a fairy god mother, she accomplished many benefits the families of actors and donated the construction of the chapel for the actors home a daycare center for National Actors Association and promoted a number of activities for the Cultural Relations of the North American and Mexican Institute.

Dolores del Rio worked as Vice-president and founder of the Defenders of Mexican Artistic Treasures Society. Formed by the country’s most active and creative people, still active after 40 years.
